Different types of Status of USA Visas

If you have submitted a nonimmigrant visa application and it has been processed into the system, you will then have an interview. After the interview, there is typically a waiting period where the status of your visa is determined. The following are some of the possible status of your USA visa after your interview.

Administrative Processing:

If this is your status, your case is undergoing administrative processing. The processing can sometimes take several weeks, but could also be shorter. If you were given instructions by the Consular Officer during your interview, this is the time to follow those instructions and get the work done. If there are other instructions for you, or if you need to provide further information, they will contact you during this period.

Issued:

If this is your status, then the final processing of your visa is being completed and you are going to receive your visa. It takes about 10 business days to receive the visa after an "issued" status. If you don't see your visa in that amount of time, you can contact the embassy or consulate where the application was submitted to get more information.

Refused:

In some situations, your case will be refused. Contacting the embassy or consulate could give you more information as to the reasons for refusal. If this is the case, there are certain steps you can take to reapply or to present evidence that your situation has changed since the first time you applied for a visa.

Immigrant Visa:

If you applied for an immigrant visa, there will be a few changes to the status of a visa after your interview. Status include "expired," "expiring soon," "return to NVC," ortransfer in progress."

Understanding your visa application status could help you to remain calm while waiting to receive the visa. Whether it is undergoing administrative processing, has been issued, or has been refused, you will know what you need to do in taking the next steps toward in your travel plans. One final thing to remember is that this process takes time, and if you plan to study abroad, or simply to travel the world, be sure that you have started the process way in advance.
